Terms of Service & Privacy Policy

In short: StelliesX connects buyers and sellers around Stellenbosch. Sellers pay a monthly plan to advertise; buyers pay sellers directly, so check items in person before paying. Be honest and respectful. We only collect what we need to run the site, never sell your information, and you can delete your account at any time.

1. Terms of Service

1.1 About StelliesX

StelliesX is an independent online marketplace for the Stellenbosch community. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Stellenbosch University. By creating an account or using the site, you agree to these terms. You must be 18 or older, or have a parent or guardian's permission, to use StelliesX.

1.2 Your account

Give accurate information, keep your password private, and use one account per person. You're responsible for what happens on your account. You need to confirm your email address before you can post ads, message sellers or leave ratings. Student (Verified ✓) is shown only for a confirmed @sun.ac.za email address; it confirms the email, not who you are.

1.3 Seller plans and posting ads

To post ads, sellers buy a monthly seller plan: Student R100 (up to 20 ads a month, only for verified students with a confirmed @sun.ac.za email), Standard R140 (up to 20 ads a month) or Premium R200 (unlimited ads, all shown as Featured). Plans renew automatically every 30 days, charged to the card you paid with, until you cancel in Post an Ad. A cancelled plan stays active until the end of the month you paid for. Buying a new plan replaces your current one. Renewing an ad counts as one of your ads for the month. Each ad is live for 30 days, ticket ads end when the event starts and ride ads when the ride leaves. Plans are paid through Paystack and are not refundable, including if you remove ads early or we remove them for breaking these terms. If you were charged but your plan never started, or charged after cancelling, contact us and we'll fix it or refund you.

1.4 Buying, selling and meeting up

Deals happen directly between buyers and sellers. StelliesX is not a party to them, never holds or handles the money for an item, and does not inspect or guarantee items, tickets, accommodation, services or rides. Meet in a public place, check the item before you pay, and never pay a deposit for accommodation you haven't viewed. For tickets, only pay once the ticket is in your name. Drivers offering rides must hold a valid licence and insurance and may only share costs, not run a taxi service.

1.5 What you may not post

No illegal goods or services; stolen or counterfeit items; weapons; drugs; alcohol or tobacco; adult content; essays, assignments or exam answers for academic dishonesty; fake, misleading or duplicate ads; spam; or accommodation ads that discriminate against people. Don't harass, threaten or scam other users.

1.6 Messages, ratings and reviews

Use messages to arrange deals, not to spam or harass. You can rate a seller after messaging them about one of their ads and getting a reply. Ratings must be honest and based on your own experience: don't offer or accept anything in exchange for a review, and don't review yourself. Deleting a chat removes it from your inbox only; the other person keeps their copy.

1.7 Reports, removals and suspensions

Use Report on any ad, chat or profile to tell us about a problem. Our admins may remove ads, reviews or messages, and suspend or close accounts, that break these terms or put people at risk.

1.8 Our responsibility

StelliesX is provided "as is". To the extent the law allows, we aren't responsible for losses arising from deals between users, from content other users post, or from the site being temporarily unavailable. Nothing in these terms limits your rights under the Consumer Protection Act or other South African law.

1.9 Changes and contact

We may update these terms; the date at the top shows when they last changed, and we'll let you know about important changes. These terms are governed by the laws of South Africa. Questions? Email support@stelliesx.co.za or use the page.

2. Privacy Policy

2.1 Who we are

StelliesX is responsible for the personal information you share on this site, under South Africa's Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). You can reach us at support@stelliesx.co.za.

2.2 What we collect

Your account: name, email address, phone number, Student or Non-Student status, bio, and (only if you add one) a profile photo. Your password is stored only as a secure hash, never as readable text.
What you post: your ads, their photos and the contact details you put on them; your messages; ratings and reviews you give or receive; reports and contact-form messages.
Payments: which package you bought, the amount and Paystack's payment reference. We never see or store your card or bank details; Paystack handles those.
Technical: one login cookie (see below).

2.3 How we use it

To run your account, show your ads, deliver your messages, process seller plan payments, and send account emails (email confirmation and password reset). We also use it to keep StelliesX safe: reviewing reports, removing scams and enforcing our terms. We don't send marketing emails, and we never sell your information.

2.4 What other people can see

Your public profile shows your short name (e.g. "Sipho M."), status, bio, profile photo, when you joined, your ratings and reviews, and your live ads. Your ads show the phone number and email address you choose to put on them. Messages are only visible to you and the person you're chatting with. Your account email address is never shown on your profile.

2.5 Who we share it with

Only the service providers we need to run StelliesX: Paystack (to process seller plan payments), our email provider (to send account emails) and our hosting provider. They may only use it to provide their service to us. We'll also share information if the law requires it.

2.6 Cookies

We use a single essential cookie that keeps you logged in. It lasts 30 days or until you log out. We don't use advertising or tracking cookies. Some images and page styles load from outside services (such as image hosts), which can see your device's IP address when they load.

2.7 How long we keep it

Your account information stays until you delete your account. Expired ads remain in your My Listings until you remove them. A chat is erased once both people have deleted it, or when either account is deleted. Payment records are kept for 5 years for tax purposes, without your name attached once your account is deleted. Reports may be kept for as long as needed to keep the community safe.

2.8 Keeping it secure

Passwords are hashed, email links can only be used once and expire, and connections to StelliesX are encrypted (HTTPS). Only our admins can see reports and payment records. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.

2.9 Your rights

You can see and correct your information in your profile at any time. You can delete your account yourself from your profile: this removes your profile, photo, ads, chats and ratings. You can also ask us what information we hold about you, or object to how we use it, by emailing support@stelliesx.co.za. If you're unhappy with our response, you can complain to the Information Regulator (inforegulator.org.za).
